Lottie Moon

My kids have been pretty involved this year in raising money for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering...the church held a tea for women of all ages, which I loved because I could take Emily, with the purpose of explaining why the Lottie Moon offering was important for missionaries.  They had a guest speaker, a former Missionary in Africa, come speak and I have to say, I now have a whole new appreciation for this mission.  I understand how much the missionaries depend on these funds...to pay for anything from housing to a vehicle to get from village to village or Bibles for the unreached people...they do not have to go door to door asking for money or send out letters or beg for support, the Lottie Moon Offering supports the International Mission Board Missionaries and I can imagine that this would be a huge deal and burden lifted.  Emily was very interested in giving and gave in different ways...one day she found all of the loose change around the house and took it to church, the next week she took part of her own money and gave.  We have studied Lottie Moon and know the history and a little about her life. We know of several missionaries right now serving in countries through the International Mission Board.  It is exciting and humbling to see how they make the funds go so far...In Jesus' name.

Celebrating New Life..

One of my very best friends is having her first baby girl..the third child and such a blessing.  Another best friend and I decided to throw her a shower.  Our goal was to have an very intimate warm and snuggly dinner party.  We wanted prayer time and good conversation...I think we achieved our goal.  It was a warm and snuggly time celebrating new life.  My friend's sister just started her own event design company and did the decor for free...they did a wonderful job and the decor was so cute.  We even had a hot chocolate bar!

I got to use my grandmother's china and silver

Our big girls helped serve the guests and helped Ms. Debi with her presents...they loved it and so did we!

Oh Christmas Tree....

My grandparents took us on our annual christmas tree hunt...their present to us is our tree!

The kids love going to Tallahassee nurseries and drinking hot cider while looking at pretty gardens, the green house fish and of course picking out the BEST tree!  They agreed on one this year which was superb!

Our crazy crew picking out trees...Granny isn't made...she is talking in this one!

Looking at the fish..

We love doing this with my grandparents...it seems perfect for them and it is perfect for us!  They don't buy us anything else and they know it is something that we truly appreciate and love and NEED!

And the final product.

Le Moyne Art Exhibit

My grandmother and Aunt gave my mom and I two tickets to the annual Le Moyne Art Exhibit.  We decided to make it a girl's day and take Emily to see all the pretty Christmas displays and hand made art.  It was lovely and beautiful...

Piano and Ballet

Winter Piano Recital

Two of Emily's extra curricular activites that she loves....We do extra-curricular activities to add to our school...I'm not sure we would have time or funds to do things like this if Emily was in public or private school all day long and then come home to do homework and other activites...it would just be too hard.  But at this point we have time and we enjoy going as a family to watch her and John Daniel do their extra activities.  I don't teach music at home, nor do I teach art or dance and these are Emily's favorite things....She has rhythm, style, and a good ear.  We love watching her do these things for God's glory~

Market Days

We found out from friends that the annual Tallahassee Market Days had a kids entrepreneur tent.  Emily has always loved crafts, art, or anything musical.  I asked her if she wanted to participate and she of course said yes.  The only rules are that it cannot be edible and that the craft had to be made by the child.  A long time ago, her and I had the idea of making ribbon flip flops and flower headbands...we have made the ribbon flip flops before and they were really cute.  This time though, because you can't possibly buy everyone's size, she decided to wrap ribbon around headbands and decorate with flowers and other adornments and sell those.  She made a couple of ribbon wreaths as well but these turned out way harder than expected and very costly to purchase the supplies.  The ribbon headbands were fairly cheap...$. 50 for a dollar store headband and $1.00 for the ribbon.  She sold them for $3.00.  She worked tirelessly on the headbands for days...she did them totally by herself and finished the entire project, even making more at the last minute when we decided to increase the inventory...This is my Emily....artsy, creative, hardworking, performance oriented....she loved it and it is where she shines.  As I have said before, she doesn't like math but we talked about how she would use math in selling the headbands, knowing how much to price them, counting profit, etc but I realized something about my girl.  I'm so hard on her sometimes when it comes to math ...I get frustrated when she doesn't get it right away, I get even more frustrated when she has a bad attitude over it...which I know she doesn't need to have a poor attitude and she HAS to learn math....but I did realize that I shouldn't put so much pressure on her, she isn't going to be a math teacher, a CPA, or else...it just isn't her...she will be a teacher, a performer, an artist.....I need to come at math with a different angle...she doesn't have to love it like say someone that wants to major in Math, but she needs to be able to use it to her advantage in the things she does like.  Maybe that is why measurements come fairly easy to her because she likes to cook and she is able to take a recipe and look at it and make it using the measurements...(to some extent on her own)....It's useful I guess.  I always stunk at measurements and conversions.  I don't need to make her into something she is not....this is my Emily.  The lack of attention and detail and work ethic that she sometimes displays with her math.....somehow totally reversed itself when doing something like her craft.  It was cool!

She named her booth "Randazzle Ribbons" and sold over half of her inventory.  She made over $50.  John Daniel even made yarn napkin rings that he sent with her to sell...they sold as well at 4 for $1.  It was a great great experience which we will try to repeat again next year!
