Day 3...City life, blustery weather, a lot of walking and some culture!

This pretty much sums up our day along The Mall...First I'd like to note that my kids think they are city folk now...Emily informed us this morning that she was going to take her IPOD on the Metro so she could listen to her music like everyone else....Molly knows that you have to hold on to the poles in the train...now when she is riding in the backpack she makes you stand so that she TOO can hold on to a pole.  Let's just say we use lots of hand sanitizer!  John Daniel can tell us now which stop we need to take and carried his own backpack today around the city....just like most everyone riding the train!  They are hilarious but so cute!  We knew it was going to be ugly weather so John thought it best to start looking around in the Smithsonian Museums...he said one museum would take us many hours.  I didn't believe it...I'm thinking Mary Brogan in Tally or something of the sort....well I laugh now because these magnificent museums are enormous...!!!!  It literally took us half a day in just the National Museum of Natural History!  It was the most grand museum I have ever been in and it never ended!  From the history of humans to sea life to bones to dinosaurs to mammals to plant life to gem stones to orchids to water animals...and more!  It went on and on and on!  It was beautiful and so mind blowing!

Just like Night at the Museum!

The Hope Diamond!

Everything is so grandiose!

We toured a butterfly garden where butterflies were flying all around...
Molly liked this man...she kept visiting him and wanted her picture with him!

The insect zoo was probably one of our favorite exhibits.

BEES!  They had a little pipe that led outside and then they would fly back into the museum to their hive...

John Daniel holding a millipede.  There were scientists all over doing show and tell with hands on exhibits.

Tarantula feeding!  CREEPY!

This picture does it no justice!  This is only half of it.

Rainy, rainy, rainy day!  We carried umbrellas and kept fairly dry by being indoor most of the day!

National Museum of the Native Americans...we pretty much ate here.  They had all different kinds of Indian cuisine...the museum wasn't as interesting for the kids but we walked around a little!

Next was the National Air and Space Museum...John Daniel's eyes were sooooo big as we walked in!

It was pretty mind blowing...

We didn't even make it through half of this museum...we have to go back another day and take it all in. The space exhibits were incredible.

John Daniel wanted a picture of everything!

As we left the museums, the weather got worse and we ended up soaked trying to get to a Metro station....The wind was so bad that it broke TWO of our umbrellas by turning them totally inside out and snapping them in half...the kids thought we were in a tornado!  We had to walk backwards part of the time just to keep the rain and wind out of our face.  John Daniel said he couldn't breath...Molly kept saying WET!  The wind was so strong!  We finally made it to the Metro...John had chunked the umbrellas in a trash can along the way, everyone is laughing now, and home we go!  We ordered pizza for dinner to say the least!  And now all our clothes are drying out in the apartment!  What a crazy, exhausting day...but I feel smarter and more "cultured" than ever!

I wish I could be doing all of this with you -- it looks like so much fun.
What a blessing to be able to share all the wonder with the kids. I bet it makes you see things with fresh eyes too.
And man! What a lot to learn. I just kept looking at the pictures and wishing I could be there too.
The Air and Space museum was Sam's favorite when we were there. He was just a little older than Emily. And now he's all grown up, snif!
