Day 7....walked a half marathon, 500 feet in the air, American History and dinner on a roof!

We started our morning with the American History Museum....although John started his morning at 5:45 when he left to get on the Metro to stand in a line for 2 hours to get tickets for the Washington Monument...man he is a good Daddy!  He even brought us bagels back!  The American History Museum is EVERYTHING American complete with a McDonald's inside!  We did 95% of the exhibits...have I told you lately these museums are ginormous!!!!  They go on forever!  Above is the Julia Child's kitchen exhibit...all her kitchen equipment!

All about transportation!

We took a little break on the lawn of the Mall...had some snacks and played around!

John got us tickets to the Washington Monument for 2:30...we headed that way...it was so windy up on the hill that it felt like you couldn't even walk!

Views from inside the Washington Monument at 500 feet!

Then we walked over to the White House..on the way I called Rep. Southerland's office to just make sure we had not received tour clearance because I had not heard from them....he apologized and said he should have emailed us but NO, the Secret Service had denied our request!  How dare them!  I have to say I felt a little dejected!
But we stood on the outside and took pictures!

Next, we went BACK to the American History Museum and continued where we had left off.  Emily's MOST favorite exhibit was next...the First Lady exhibit...all their gowns, jewelry, shoes, info.

First Lady Obama's gown.

And the original ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz worn by Judy Garland.

Minnie Pearl's hat

Lincoln's top hat

Molly was so over it by now...at one point she just collapsed on the marble floor in the middle of the Smithsonian!

Next, we walked toward the Metro stop but stopped in at the National Archives...this is the only picture I have because Photography is not allowed in the building.  We saw the original Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights..it was very cool!  The rotunda where they lay inside glass is guarded with armed guards, has low lighting, very cool in temperature and surrounded by an iron gate.

We rode the Metro to Nic's apartment where he hosted a cookout on his roof!  He invited friends to come hang out with us....he even went to the grocery store which I'm quite sure is a rare occurrence.  His friend "P" grilled yummy burgers and we chatted and enjoyed the view.  We discussed life in DC, their jobs...there were 4 attorneys, an IS guy, and a researcher that works on stem cells in the salivary glands (can we say he has a specific job or what) at the National Institute of Health...I felt a little "blue collar" to say the least!  But John and I held our own...we only mentioned that we had chickens once!  :)  We found out that one of the guys doesn't even know how to drive...he has always lived in a big city and used public transportation...and the girls who all happen to be lawyers each have a drawer at work full of high heels so they don't have to walk all over town in heels...they change when they get there.  The view was amazing and the kids enjoyed walking up to the crow's nest to get even higher....Molly ate lots of chips!  Nic wanted pictures since he doesn't own a camera!

silly picture!

We walked all the way home from U-street to our hotel and "enjoyed" the night life at 10:00 pm in the big city...we have kept our kids up LATE and being in the city with them that late is really interesting!  But it has been fun walking down the sidewalks, discussing life, and holding hands!  We are also happy that Nic Nic has spent so much time with us!  They have really enjoyed their uncle...
