Second Grade

Tonight I got to go to the "Mother's Coffee" at CCS. All of us moms went to our child's class and had coffee together with their teachers. Each teacher uses it as a "get to know you" session and answers questions and tells us about our child's day etc. It is so funny hearing about second grade from the teacher's perspective vs the other parents' perspectives vs your own child's perspective. It is fun to hear what the other kids like and dislike and what the teacher has observed already. We found out some cool things about Mrs. Smith. She has three daughters that are very spread out in age. She has been married 26 years. Her husband is a doctor. Her first daughter is 25, married, and is a 6th grade teacher at CCS. Her middle daughter is 21 and is in nursing school and her 3rd daughter is 11, in 6th grade at CCS, and has her own older sister as her teacher! Mrs. Smith said it makes for a very unique dynamic between the three of them this year. She loves CCS and all three of her daughters have graduated from there. Emily left me a lovely picture on her desk! We got to hear about all that they are doing. Emily is in the "Cheerios" reading group (the highest I might add!). They are reviewing addition and subtraction (which Emily needs). They have started writing in a writing log. This is where she is teaching them about rough drafts, proofreading, and publishing. The entire class will be published at the end of the year in a real hard back book! In October we are going to the capitol to tour around. They even get to do a mock senate session where they will vote on a bill! I am chaperoning this one! Emily's desk was perfect...neat as can be! It was dramatically different than the boy's desk that she sits next to! My heart beamed when the mother of her friend Marissa spoke to the class about her daughter. Marissa has a traumatic brain injury from being in a car accident three years ago. She has a special helper come to the class three hours during the day to help her with work. Her mother was just kind of explaining Marissa's situation to the other mothers. She said to the women and "Emily is a very special friend..and has always loved Marissa and Marissa loves her." I got chill bumps. Marissa was in Emily's class last year but they had never met before this. I could really care less what Emily learns if she can continue to be the compassionate person that she is. She helps Marissa up stairs and helps her walk to different areas around campus when her leg is bothering her. Emily has never made one comment to me about how Marissa is "different". She loves being her friend. I just had to brag on my child and thank God for the heart that she has and how her sweet spirit shows through in her friendship with Marissa. So it was a great night. Emily was so excited to hear about everything when I got home! I left her a little love note in her desk for her to read in the morning...
